Felix-Nicolai Müller: 20GB no cost cloud storage on linux with copy.com

Hi,

today, I had to search for a cloud storage service, as I needed more than the 10 Gigs I normally keep a reserved server for. I wanted it to be Linux compatible, have a storage space of about 20 GB and a method to use the service from console. I also wanted it to be free as in no cost. Now, I would have loved to connect to the cloud with Linuxs’ own tools, but a console/CLI tool would suffice, too.
After some searching, I stumbled upon copy.com, a seemingly new cloud storage provider, which offers 20 GB from the get go. It also offers a closed source Linux client (no installation/compiling required), which can be used as a daemon, a console tool and as an QT app. Needles to say, it also offers all the other things other cloud storage providers offer, like sharing stuff with friends, etc.
So I tried it.

And so far…. I love it! There is no bandwidth limit, no cost, the software seems to be stable so far and it is currently really easy to vastly expand the storage space they give you for free, as you get 5GB per referral.

So these are the reasons why I want to recommend to you to sign up for this service right now. It would be especially great, if you used my referral link https://copy.com?r=QvEy6t as I would indeed like to profit a little bit of this opportunity ;-) And again, I would not recommend the service if I did not like it.

So how does the linux software work?
You simply download the gzip package to your computer and unpack it to the folder of your pleasing. I put my copy in ~/bin/copycom .
All you need to do after that is run the (CLI) program with the correct parameters. As an example, I want to synchronize my folder  /storage/tmp/pub with the cloud storage, so the command is:
~/bin/copycom/x86/CopyConsole -username=emailaddress@provider.com -root=/storage/tmp/pub -appdata=/home/fnmueller/bin/copycom/x86

I prefer to run the program in a screen session, so I can detach over night while the program continues to synchronize with the server. Please also don’t forget, that there is a 64bit architecture version of the program, which can be used :-)

Hope you also like the service! This is the first time I publish something I get some sort of incentive for (the free 5GB for a referral), but there is no payment of any other sort and I was not asked to write this post.
